Former Chelsea chief scout Lee Congerton was appointed Head of Senior Recruitment at Leicester City in March 2019.
He replaced Eduardo Macia, who left the club to become Director of Football at Bordeaux, and has reunited with Brendan Rodgers after the duo worked together at two clubs.
Their most recent working relationship was at Celtic, where Congerton was Head of Recruitment for over two years during Rodgers’ managerial reign.
Congerton came under heavy criticism from Celtic supporters and Scottish media for the signings made during his time at the club, but Rodgers has defended his colleague and close friend.
When at Celtic, Rodgers told the Scottish Herald: “His job is to find the players and, in his time here, he’s done that. Now whether we get them here or not is a different story. But, listen, the regular supporter wouldn’t know the operation.
“And when one or two get emotional in the media and start to point fingers, that can snowball. But he’s very talented. He hasn’t worked in the game for this period of time without having that talent. And he loves it.”
The son of former Rhyl player Dave Congerton, Lee played for his father’s former club and Colwyn Bay in non-league before earning his first professional contract with Crewe Alexandra.
His short career in the Football League was blighted by injuries and it was during this time that he discovered his love for coaching.
His first role was Youth System Director at Wrexham, where he stayed until moving to coach at Liverpool in 2002.
A move to Chelsea came about in 2005 and Congerton coached the youth team before being appointed Chief Scout by the club’s new Sporting Director, Frank Arnesen.
It was at Stamford Bridge that Congerton first met Brendan Rodgers, who was in charge of coaching the reserves from 2004 to 2008.
Congerton identified and recruited talents such as Ryan Bertrand, Daniel Sturridge, Scott Sinclair and Fabio Borini.
In 2011, he followed Arnesen to Hamburg and became their Technical Director. His work was so impressive that West Bromwich Albion saw an approach for his services rejected the following year.
A return to England happened in March 2014, with Congerton becoming Sporting Director at Sunderland until their relegation from the Premier League in 2017.
He reunited with Rodgers by making the move to Glasgow, heading up Celtic’s recruitment operation until he was reunited with Rodgers back in March.
