Who is Lee Congerton?
Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to reunite with recruitment chief Lee Congerton, as per John Percy of the Telegraph.
Congerton is currently the Head of Recruitment at Celtic, where he spent two years working with Rodgers on scouting and transfers.
The pair also worked together during Rodgers’ time as manager of the Reserves at Chelsea, when Congerton was the Chief Scout at Stamford Bridge.
Between his roles at Chelsea and Celtic, Congerton diversified his skills by taking on the role of Technical Director at Hamburger SV and Sunderland. He worked with former Blues scout Frank Arnesen at Hamburg, although the Dane now is now the Sporting Director RSC Anderlecht.
Congerton has a small group of loyal scouts who have worked with him at all (or several) of the clubs he has been at.
Scouts likely to join
Houston is a very intelligent man with a background in data analytics and has previously worked for the aptly-named basketball team Houston Rockets, where he learned his analytical trade in the world of sport.
So impressive was his work with the Rockets that Houston then moved to Chelsea and took on the Head of Technical Scouting and Data Analysis role.
It was at Stamford Bridge that he met Brendan Rodgers and Lee Congerton. He then moved to Hamburg with Congerton in 2011, where he took up the role of Chief Technical Scout.
The pair then left for Sunderland in 2014 and Houston took up the role of Head of Scouting, while Congerton worked as Technical Director at the Stadium of Light.
Houston spoke in great detail about the role of data analytics in football during a fantastic interview with Sky Sports’ Adam Bate.
If Doherty were to join Leicester City, it would be likely that he would head up the club’s international scouting operations.
The highly experienced talent spotter has worked as an International Scout for both Chelsea and Celtic, either side of a short spell as Sunderland’s Head of Recruitment between 2016 and 2017. At the Stadium of Light, he oversaw a large recruitment operation under manager David Moyes.
Before joining Chelsea, he was responsible for scouting players aged 17-23 for Everton, where he had previously been Head of Academy Recruitment from 1997-2001.
Laban Scott Libby
Loughborough University graduate Libby has worked as a Technical Scout for Celtic since 2017.
He started his career as a Player Research Assistant at Chelsea between 2010 and 2011, working under Congerton and Houston.
Subsequently, he followed the duo to Hamburg in 2012 and spent two years as a Video Scout for the Bundesliga club.
His next move has now become somewhat predictable. Yep, he joined Sunderland in 2014 as a Technical Scout before being promoted to Head of Technical Scouting in 2015.
After departing the Stadium of Light a year later, he is – you guessed it – now working with Congerton once more at Celtic.
Scouts likely to stay
Mills holds the title of Senior Scout at Leicester City and has been a valued member of the club’s recruitment department for many years. His opinions and reports are held in the highest esteem. His worth has shown over the years as several managers have kept Mills on in his role and he has been of equal value to each.
The key roles of Head of Technical Scout and Senior Scouting Coordinator are both held by highly-rated scout Ollie Waldron. He has previously worked as an analyst for AFC Bournemouth and Birmingham City.
FoxesHub understands that his in-depth reports and presentations are highly admired by recruitment staff and the club would be highly reluctant to see him depart.
Smithson works under Waldron as a Technical Scout at Leicester City. He has held this role for almost four years and gained valuable experience working under the likes of Steve Walsh, Rob Mackenzie and Ben Wrigglesworth during their times at King Power Stadium.
Thacker joined the Foxes in January 2017 as Head of 17-23 Recruitment and has been pivotal in the signings of several youngsters for the Under-18s and Development Squad.
He works closely with the senior scouting staff and has also been sent to watch potential transfer targets for the first team.
Some plausible returns
This could be one for Leicester fans to get excited about.
Mackenzie knows the club’s recruitment department well, having previously worked as Head of Technical Scouting under Steve Walsh. He had a short spells at Tottenham Hotspur and Derby County; and has been working as a recruitment consultant for clubs across Europe.
He also currently holds the role of Head of Technical Scouting at Oud-Heverlee Leuven, a Belgian second-tier club owned by King Power International.
The Yorkshireman also worked as a recruitment consultant for Sunderland on a three-month contract in 2017, when Michael Doherty was the club’s Head of Recruitment.
Walsh spent a short period of time working with Brendan Rodgers (and Lee Congerton, for that matter) at Chelsea during the 2005-06 season.
The experienced scout left Chelsea in 2006 after 16 years to take up the Chief Scout role at Newcastle United, where he first met former Foxes boss Nigel Pearson.
The rest, as they say, is history.
